From far back in the murky depths of my addled memory I seem to recall a version of Lovelight that ends with Pigpen saying that phrase during or just after the final crescendo of the song. This memory probably dates from hearing Lovelight around 1969 or 1970 (though the recording could be earlier), if it isn't just a hallucination.

Anybody else recall this, or heard it lately?

Thanks in advance, if you can help remedy my ignorance (a big job)

Hey SB--as Earl would say, we are kicking a Dead Horse at this point (although maybe not as no one can deliever a knock out blow!), but reading your comment forced me to actually go listen to it with headphones for the first time in years, and I just can't see the Jerry in it. When "talking" Jerry has a much higher voice, and Phil a much stronger, vaguely nasal tone, and this voices fits him perfectly, in my (not so) humble opinion...

I guess if no one can muster any real evidence we are stuck with just evaluating the sound, but I really can't see the Jerry given what the two of them sound like when making comments during banter and such from the early era.

It really sounds like Phil to me (or a real long shot of a non-band member), but not Jerry.

Not high enough...compare to the interviews with Jerry, such as at Playboy After Dark...his voice is reedy, almost verging on...well...analogies escape me. But it is much higher than this one. Phil, though he sang high harmonies, has a large adam's apple voice with real projection like this comment. Jerry "breaks" when he yells if you follow me, unless singing...

Oh well, we can agree to disagree I suppose.

It's from LIVE DEAD. I don't know what the specific concert date of that Lovelight recording was. Funny... to me it always sounded like Phil saying it.

Thanks! That's it!

My notes on the album say Lovelight is from January 26, 1969, at the Avalon:

Sounds like Jerry, to me.

This haunted me because I think I first heard it in high school, long long ago, in another galaxy, far far away...

Ahem...I assumed it was "common knowledge" it was Phil.

Does anyone know? Seriously, I am a twit when it comes to music, but voices, I am usu good at...

I am sure it is Phil.

Anyone?

Hmm... pretty obviously Phil, in my opinion. Besides, who else would say that? Pigpen might but it sounds nothing like him - same with Bob. I can't picture Jerry saying that. And it sounds like Phil.

One vote "Phil" here.

Watch it turn out to be some promoter or roadie or something. But I've always thought it was Phil. If it ain't, whoever it is sure sounds like him.

Funny, but I considered that...I just think that it happens too quickly, and as J notes above, the comments you hear suggest Phil as well...

The voice is almost "too Phil" if that makes any sense, in that it both sounds like him, and is like his other comments during this time, which I have listened to a great deal (ie, early era). It fits in all respects, IMHO.

But, I concede (small chance) it could be overturned by finding out someone jumped to the mic and did that...my main pt is that out of the BAND members, it has to be Phil, and I believe it IS him...

It WAS Phil. Also, if you listen to the audio very CAREFULLY, you can here Pig say something to Phil right after that just off microphone. :-)

I believe it's Pigpen.
Also on the 9/19/70 Lovelight when Pigpen is rapping with the audience, he hands the mic to someone who also says "leave it on Pigpen."

Right; but we are talking about the Jan, 69 recording of LL, and I just googled it (authoritative, eh?) and most reviews cite Phil for the credit...

Not that this means squat.

Sounds like Philbert to me as well... but man, is it distorted. No wonder it's confusing people. He's also talking in a slightly higher pitch than usual, which makes him sound a little more like Jerry...

OK, now I feel validated since you concur with my Phil voice ID. By the way, Mr. Tell, in my 2 posts today I referenced '69, '70, and '71 recordings. It's like I'm trying to fit in with the likes of you, Cliff, and the lady friend of yours!

Not to worry, though, I'll probably sneak in a little '85 listening on the drive home today :-)

Well, trust me--D is talking about THE one that is on Live Dead, from Avalon, Jan, 69.

The reason it IS Phil, is both PP and Bob have been screaming, etc., etc., and a strong, fresh voice jumps to the mic (you can "hear" this), and it strongly states the line in question. It comes too quickly to be either PP or Bob.

So, it comes down to Phil or Jerry.

But most importantly, it sounds like Phil.

Oh, and did I mention Phil cops to it? Read it somewhere.

I know, I know, I shoulda mentioned that before...

But I didn't cause I could be mis-remembering.

Hasn't someone else read it somewhere?

Phil doesn't mention it in his book, though he provides lots of wonderful information about this run. Including how the previous night Bear had been unable to get the new 16-track Ampex to pick up Bobby's track at all, and the whole show had to be scrapped (so far as use on the album was concerned).

But on a second, closer, listen, with headphones this time, I have to agree it's Phil. Bobby and Pig both croak out thank you's at the end, and a fresh voice says, "And leave it on!" Not Jerry, on closer examination, and rather like Phil.

So I come around to WT's opinion and the "generally accepted" view. How do these minutiae become generally accepted? Are there really that many deadheads listening that closely?

Anyway, thanks everybody for helping me pinpoint that murky memory

That's what is so amazing about this!??

I was sure from way back that somehow it WAS common knowledge, BUT could find NO source to confirm!

I guess we should all send Phil a note...eh?

Great fun one and all!

Was just listening to Live Dead last night on the iPod while doing other stuff. If you haven't given it a spin recently well worth a redo. Amazing DS...and everything else. Sure the accumulated Dead wisdom on the Forum doesn't need any reminders.
